St. Lucia Honeymoon Guide: Pitons, Chocolate, and Romance

Where volcanic peaks meet the sea and every sunset feels like it was staged just for you.

Some destinations are beautiful. St. Lucia is dramatic. Twin volcanic peaks — the Pitons — rise nearly 800 metres from the sea. Rainforest blankets the mountainsides. Waterfalls tumble into hidden pools. The air smells of nutmeg and cocoa. And the sunsets paint the sky in colours that no filter could improve.

It's no wonder St. Lucia is the Caribbean's most sought-after honeymoon destination. If you're looking for romance that goes beyond a nice hotel room, this island delivers something transformative.

Where to Stay: The Resorts That Define Romance

Jade Mountain

The most iconic honeymoon hotel in the Caribbean — possibly the world. Every "sanctuary" (they don't call them rooms) has only three walls. The fourth wall is open to an unobstructed view of the Pitons and the sea. Private infinity pools, enormous living spaces, and no television or telephone by design. It's a place built for two people to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other. Rates are premium, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Anse Chastanet

Jade Mountain's sister property, nestled at the base of the Pitons on two pristine beaches. Anse Chastanet is slightly more accessible in price while maintaining the same extraordinary setting. The rooms are built into the hillside with open-air designs that frame the jungle and sea. The resort's coral reef is one of the best snorkelling sites in the Caribbean, accessible right from the beach.

Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort

Occupying a former sugar plantation between the Pitons, Sugar Beach combines colonial-era elegance with modern luxury. The treehouse-style villas perch on the hillside, each with a private plunge pool. The location — in the valley between the two Pitons, with a white-sand beach at your feet — is staggering.

Ladera Resort

Another open-wall resort perched 300 metres above the sea on the Piton ridge. Ladera is smaller and more intimate than Jade Mountain, with suites and villas that feel like they're suspended between sky and sea. The Dasheene restaurant, with its vertiginous Piton views, is one of the most memorable dining experiences in the Caribbean.

Marigot Bay Resort and Marina

On the island's west coast, Marigot Bay is a sheltered harbour that James Michener called "the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean." The resort here is quieter and more secluded than the Piton-area properties, with an excellent spa, marina, and a sense of privacy that honeymooners cherish.

Romantic Experiences

Sunset Sail Along the Coast

Charter a catamaran for a private sunset sail along St. Lucia's west coast. Watch the Pitons glow amber and pink as the sun descends, champagne in hand, with no one else in sight. Most charters include snorkelling stops and a catered dinner. This is the quintessential St. Lucia honeymoon experience.

Sulphur Springs and Mud Bath

The Caribbean's only drive-in volcano is near Soufriere. While the bubbling sulphur pools are a geological curiosity, the real draw is the mud bath nearby. Slathering each other in mineral-rich volcanic mud, then washing it off to reveal impossibly soft skin, is oddly romantic — and makes for memorable photos.

Cocoa Plantation Tours

St. Lucia produces exceptional single-origin cocoa, and several plantations offer tours that take you from tree to bar. At the Hotel Chocolat estate at Rabot, you can pick cocoa pods, roast and grind the beans, and make your own chocolate — all while overlooking the Pitons. The Tree to Bar experience pairs beautifully with a cocoa-infused meal at the estate's restaurant.

Tet Paul Nature Trail

A gentle guided hike through a heritage plantation with a stairway leading to a viewpoint with panoramic Piton views. It's not strenuous (about 45 minutes), making it perfect for honeymooners who want scenery without a gruelling workout. The guides are knowledgeable and will point out medicinal plants, spice trees, and native birds along the way.

Toraille Waterfall

A 15-metre waterfall tumbling into a pool surrounded by tropical plants. It's one of the most accessible waterfalls in St. Lucia — a short walk from the car park — and the pool at the base is perfect for a refreshing swim. Arrive early to have it to yourselves.

Dining for Two

St. Lucia's culinary scene has evolved dramatically. Beyond the resort restaurants, seek out:

  • Boucan by Hotel Chocolat — A cocoa-infused menu in a stunning Piton-view setting. The cocoa-crusted tuna is extraordinary.
  • Orlando's — Chef Orlando Satchell's intimate restaurant in Rodney Bay is St. Lucia's best fine dining. Reservations essential.
  • The Coal Pot — Waterfront French-Creole dining in Vigie Marina, run by one of St. Lucia's most celebrated chefs.
  • Street food in Soufriere — For something more casual, the vendors near the Soufriere waterfront serve excellent grilled fish, green fig and saltfish (St. Lucia's national dish), and fresh coconut water.

Practical Tips for Honeymoon Planning

  • Flights from Canada — Air Canada flies seasonally from Toronto and Montreal to Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) in the south. WestJet also offers seasonal service. The southern airport is closer to the Piton resorts (about 30 minutes), while George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) in the north is served by smaller inter-island carriers.
  • Airport transfers — If staying near the Pitons, the drive from Hewanorra takes about an hour on winding mountain roads. Many resorts offer water taxi or helicopter transfers as a more scenic (and faster) option. A helicopter arrival is a spectacular way to start a honeymoon.
  • Budget — St. Lucia's honeymoon resorts are premium-priced, but the experience justifies it. Expect $500-$1,500 CAD per night for the top properties. Inclusive packages that bundle meals, drinks, and activities often represent the best value.
  • Best time to visit — December through April offers the driest weather and coolest temperatures. January and February are peak season. May and June offer excellent weather with fewer crowds and better rates — a sweet spot for honeymooners.
